It all began with empathy, compassion, and an understanding of humanity.

Mother Brown's soup kitchen began with Barbara Brown handing out homemade meals to homeless people from the trunk of her Cadillac Seville in San Francisco's downtown and Fillmore districts.

More than 40 years later, Brown's modest food program has grown into the United Council of Human Services, made up of five programs offering an array of much needed services, from housing veterans to feeding thousands of individuals and families. Our newest program, Home Food Delivery, was created in the summer of 2020 to help lessen the outsized impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the most vulnerable.
